Welcome!

Old Town Fairfax is a unique destination in suburban Washington, D.C. The historic downtown area includes buildings that date back to when the city was still known as the Town of Providence. Old Town&rsquo;s charming architecture and street grid are integral to the vibrant shopping, dining, and entertainment district the area has become. <img src="https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/ehq-production-us-california/cb1438cbdb7c731c96c9add492044c865e60eff5/original/1603374718/Historic_Districts_-_Old_Town.jpg_fa5f389f3e34fea840682fcade25706a?1603374718" style="width: 300px;" class="fr-fic fr-dii fr-fir">Beginning in November 2020, the City of Fairfax will update the inventory of historic properties in the city&rsquo;s downtown. EHT Traceries, Inc., has been hired to survey properties in and around the City of Fairfax Historic District. The district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the city&rsquo;s locally-designated Old Town Fairfax Historic Overlay District. The goal of the project is to align the boundaries of the two districts. Structures within the historic district are subject to height limits, architectural appropriateness, usage, parking and setback reductions, and other regulations to help preserve the character of the district. Join the ConversationPublic outreach meetings will be held in early 2021 to present findings and hear community feedback. Community members are encouraged to participate in the process by sharing thoughts and ideas on this website. Input shared here will be considered during the final review of the boundary survey data. Updating City of Fairfax Historic District Boundaries

The second phase of the Tusico Branch stream restoration is slated to begin May 2021. This will project restore 1,000 feet of stream between Keith Avenue and Springmann Drive. Restoration is anticipated to take six months to complete.The Tusico Branch of Accotink Creek originates in Pat Rodio Park and flows east through residential neighborhoods. The first phase of the project was completed in 2020, restoring 900 feet of stream between Center Street and Chain Bridge Road.<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/EeV6OSMbDSo?autoplay=1&wmode=opaque&rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe> Existing ConditionsSevere erosion is visible throughout this reach of stream and backyards are shrinking as private property washes downstream. Homeowners have installed rock walls and sandbags in an attempt to control erosion of their properties, but the stream banks remain unstable. Fast-flowing water during rain events continues to undercut roots, resulting in the loss of many trees.Project BenefitsThis project will stabilize the banks of the stream by regrading eroded banks and reinforcing existing rock walls. Cross-vanes will be installed to reduce flow velocity and create improved aquatic habitat. The project will also remove invasive bamboo where authorized by property owners and install native vegetation to slow the spread of bamboo in the future.In addition to protecting private property, the project will improve water quality through the reduction of sediment, phosphorous, and nitrogen. The city earns credits toward the city&rsquo;s Chesapeake Bay pollutant reduction requirements.What to ExpectResidents can expect construction noise from heavy equipment, trucks, and chainsaws during work hours. The city&rsquo;s noise ordinance allows construction activity between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays. There will be occasional construction traffic to the project entrance on Keith Ave, across from Pat Rodio Park.Once the project is completed, properties along this reach of Tusico Branch will be protected from further erosion, water quality will be improved, and new trees and native vegetation will mature over time to create a healthy riparian buffer.

Confederate-related street and place names, historical markers and monuments, and elements in the city seal will be discussed in the context of how these symbols reflect the City Council&rsquo;s goals of inclusivity and building community.City residents are invited to participate in thought-provoking conversations that connect current realities with the city&rsquo;s historical past. Ultimately, through a series of listening and learning opportunities, the goal is to connect the present to a more equitable and inclusive future for all city residents, businesses, and visitors.&ldquo;This initiative, endorsed by the City Council, holds great promise for our city residents to engage with each other with respect, compassion, and an openness to learning and gaining a greater understanding of each other,&rdquo; said City of Fairfax Mayor David Meyer. &ldquo;This is an opportunity for all of us to discern what actions we may take to create a preferred future that is inclusive and more just and equitable.&rdquo;Partnership with George Mason University To accomplish this work, the city has partnered with the George Mason University Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution. Working with the Carter School, the city has outlined a process to listen to community voices, engage the community in learning sessions and structured, facilitated discussions, and will form a diverse working group to make recommendations on action items and identify areas for further community discussion. Connecting Fairfax City's Past and Present to Build a More Equitable and Inclusive Future

The City is in the process of developing and implementing Small Area Plans for the five Activity Centers defined in the 2035 Comprehensive Plan: Old Town Fairfax, Northfax, Pickett &amp; Main, Fairfax Circle, and Kamp Washington. Small Area Plans provide specific guidance for the desired mix of uses, residential density, building density, design aesthetic, street locations, multimodal connections, infrastructure improvements, parking, and open space. In June 2020, Council approved the Small Area Plans for Old Town Fairfax and Northfax.City Council recently approved funding for the development of a third Small Area Plan for Kamp Washington, located in the west end of the city around the intersections of Fairfax Boulevard, Lee Highway, and Jermantown Road. Kamp Washington has the potential to become an exciting mixed-use destination, and we are eager to engage with residents to hear their ideas throughout a public planning process.Residents, business owners, and other interested parties are encouraged to share ideas using the engagement tools below.
