The project has been completed.

Feb. 22 UPDATE: Storm pipe installation has been completed and long-term lane closures were removed Feb. 10. The remaining work includes concrete curb and sidewalk replacement, milling and paving, and pavement markings. Daily lane closures will be in place in this area from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday for this work, and the project is expected to be completed by Friday, March 10. The remaining work is weather and temperature dependent and the schedule may be adjusted.

UPDATE: The project begins Oct. 12. See "Notice of Construction Schedule" for details and traffic impacts.

The City of Fairfax Department of Public Works has developed plans to improve drainage capacity around the Fairfax Boulevard and Meredith Drive intersection. This intersection occasionally floods during severe storm events due to undersized storm sewer pipes and inlets. Expanding the capacity of the storm sewer infrastructure around Meredith Drive and connecting it to the new culvert system at Oak Street will reduce the frequency of flooding, and when it does occur, will allow flood waters to recede sooner, minimizing impacts.

In 2017, the city completed a project to replace a primary stormwater culvert that crosses Fairfax Boulevard near Oak Street, between the McDonald’s and Paul VI properties. The Paul VI redevelopment project has extended this culvert toward Panther Place. The downstream infrastructure upgrades have been completed and we are now ready to start the upstream drainage improvements.

This project will replace storm sewer pipe and manholes from 10818 Fairfax Boulevard (Dolce Vita restaurant) to 10782 Fairfax Boulevard (west side of Shops at Fairfax), as well as from 3810 Meredith Drive (Christ Lutheran Church) to Fairfax Boulevard. The majority of this work is within the roadway; however, the connection points to existing storm sewer will require permissions for minor encroachments to construct the project. The city will coordinate directly with the affected property owners.

Work is anticipated to start this summer and will require long-term lane closures in the project area. Specific details will be provided prior to the start of construction. To stay informed, please sign up for project updates.

Left turns from Meredith Dr. and Oak St. to Fairfax Blvd will be restricted. Both streets will be right turn only to Fairfax Blvd. Traffic on eastbound Fairfax Blvd will not be able to turn left to Meredith Dr. and traffic on westbound Fairfax Blvd will not be able to turn left to Oak St. This traffic pattern will be in place through late December. Thanks.
