Study to Improve the Intersection of Main Street, Lyndhurst Drive, and Trapp Road

The City of Fairfax is evaluating alternatives to improve roadway safety at the intersection of Main Street, Lyndhurst Drive, and Trapp Road. There have been numerous crashes at this intersection in recent years including a pedestrian fatality and several injuries.

In addition to this crash history, other safety concerns include the offset intersection, which increases conflicts and confusion for turning vehicles, and the multilane crosswalk, which increases risk for pedestrians attempting to cross Main Street.

The Main Street Road Safety Audit identified this intersection as a priority for improvement, and this study was included in the FY 2025-26 Two-Year Transportation Program adopted by the city council on Feb. 25, 2025. This study will analyze existing traffic and safety data; collect public input about current experiences, safety concerns, and needs while traveling through this intersection; evaluate the feasibility of alternative intersection designs; and develop a preliminary concept for the preferred alternative. If approved, the city would then seek construction funding to implement the preferred concept.
