March 25, 2024, UPDATE: The project has been completed.

Roberts Road between Main Street and Dwight Avenue will be temporarily closed to through traffic Feb. 5-6. Work will occur during the day and night to complete the work. Some construction noise may be unavoidable during this time. Due to damaged water valves, Fairfax Water was unable to relocate the water line as previously scheduled. Fairfax Water will provide specific water shutdown schedule details to the impacted addresses.

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. Please contact me at 703-273-8109 or Sayed.Masood@Fairfaxva.gov if you have any questions or concerns.

###

The City of Fairfax Public Works Department has begun a project to complete drainage and frontage improvements on Roberts Road between Dwight Avenue and Main Street.

Project Features

  • New curb and gutter structures and driveway aprons will be constructed on the east side of Roberts Road. These new structures will contain stormwater runoff to the roadway and prevent it from flowing onto private properties and causing erosion.
  • New storm sewer inlets and pipes will collect and carry runoff from the roadway to the existing downstream storm sewer system.

Existing Conditions
Several properties on the east side of Roberts Road are at a lower elevation than the roadway. During intense storm events, runoff from the road flows into yards and driveways and causes erosion.

None of the properties on the east side of Roberts Road have curb/gutter or concrete driveway aprons. All properties on the east side of the road will receive these improvements. The city will be responsible for future maintenance of all curb/gutter and driveway aprons and maintaining a consistent appearance.

Next Steps

The city has awarded a contract to Sagres Construction to complete the Roberts Road East Drainage Improvement project. Construction is scheduled to begin on or about Oct. 25, 2023, and will be completed by the spring of next year.

Working hours will be within the city’s noise ordinance from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Construction will start at 4005 Roberts Rd. and end at 4043 Roberts Rd.

Temporary closure of the eastern lane (right lane northbound) will be required for safety during construction. Crews from Sagres Construction will set up temporary barriers to safely complete the work. Flagmen will direct traffic flow during work hours. The road will be returned to trafficable condition at the end of each working day. Burke Station Road is an alternative north-south route between Main Street and Braddock Road that will avoid the project work zone.

Steve Nilson from AMT is the construction inspector and will be on-site during construction. He will coordinate with residents on any driveway access impacts. Steve Nilson can be contacted at 540-424-9390 or SNilson@amtengineering.com.

Due to limited space, this project will only install curb/gutter and driveway aprons on the east side of the road. No sidewalk will be installed with this project.
