Consultation has concluded
Feb. 22 UPDATE: Theoutfall relocation project is substantially complete. The trail has been repaved and is open for use. The silt fence will remain in place until grass establishes this spring, and the safety fence will be removed after handrails are installed at the outfall.
###
The City of Fairfax Public Works Department plans to improve drainage problems along a section of paved trail that runs under University Drive, just north of Layton Hall Drive. An outfall draining stormwater runoff directly onto the trail in this location causes standing water and slippery conditions.
The outfall is currently located inside the box culvert under University Drive. Crews will remove this outfall from inside the box culvert and direct runoff through a new pipe under the trail and into Accotink Creek. The project includes regrading the section of the trail west of and inside the culvert to address standing water.
The city has awarded a contract to Utilities Unlimited to complete the University Dr. Outfall Relocation Project. Construction is scheduled to begin on or about Nov. 27, 2023, and will be completed in approximately four weeks. Work may be postponed due to inclement weather.
Temporary trail closures at three points around the project will be required. Signs will be posted on the trail directing pedestrians around the work area. The trail will be reopened once the project is complete.
This drainage improvement is supported by the Stormwater Utility fund.

I agree with Ana
I love being able to walk underneath University Drive here. Please keep this unique feature of our neighborhood.
