The City of Fairfax Public Works Department plans to rehabilitate approximately 3,700 feet of aging sanitary sewer force main along Andes Drive. The eight-inch cast iron pipe conveys wastewater from homes to the Andes Drive pump station. A liner will be installed inside the pipe to extend the usable life expectancy of the pipe. This project will require some excavation in the right of way and a temporary above-ground sewer bypass. The project will begin in late April or early May and take about two months to complete.
Repairing and extending the life of critical wastewater infrastructure prevents failure, which could result in sanitary service disruptions, environmental harm, and more extensive repairs. This project follows the successful relining of the sanitary sewer force mains on Byrd Drive and San Juan Drive.
Spraying a New Pipe Liner The city’s contractor, J. Fletcher Creamer & Son, Inc., will reline the inside of the pipe to extend its useful life expectancy. A small device pulled through the length of the pipe will spray a thin layer of epoxy that will harden and form a new lining. This method is more cost effective than full replacement and requires minimal excavation.

Minimal Excavation The city has a maintenance easement on private property for accessing the force main. Excavation within this easement may occur to complete repairs to any section of force main pipe that cannot be lined. Some excavation in the right of way is required.
If necessary, a temporary sewer bypass will be installed to ensure residents’ wastewater service remains uninterrupted. The work may require short-term lane closures, and some areas may be coned off for several days.

Thank you for your question. We are still in the planning phase. The contractor has proposed an alternate bypass plan and rehab methods, both of which are under review. The current project timeline is to start work toward the end of April or early May. The project should be completed in less than 60 days from the start date.
