About the Study

The City of Fairfax is evaluating the feasibility of constructing a new sidewalk on the west side of Burke Station Road between Stoughton Road and the south city line (Grefe Drive). Burke Station Road is a collector road with traffic volumes of more than 6,000 vehicles per day, and it connects to numerous neighborhood streets between Main Street and Braddock Road. Completing the sidewalk network to provide continuous walkways on both sides of this busy road would improve safety and walkability in the neighborhood.

The city conducted a high-level evaluation of the existing street and sidewalk network in this area based on the Residential New Sidewalk Policy. This project was recommended for further study and approved by the Fairfax City Council in the FY 2024-2025 Two-Year Transportation Program.

The goals of the sidewalk feasibility study include:

  • Evaluate existing conditions such as available right-of-way, utility locations, and other conditions that may impact sidewalk design and cost
  • Develop preliminary concept design to identify potential conflicts and funding needs
  • Collect community feedback about the preliminary concept design

Study Status

This project is in the “Concept” phase, near the beginning of the development process, and subsequent phases have not been funded. This is a critical stage for community feedback. The city council needs input to determine whether this project should proceed. If there is consensus to proceed, the council may direct staff to seek funding for design and construction.
