Aug. 13, 2024, UPDATE: Second Phase of Old Town Fairfax Lighting Project Continues Aug. 19
Installation of new LED streetlights in Historic Old Town Fairfax is slated to start Aug. 19 and may take 12 weeks to complete. LED streetlights will be installed in the following areas as part of phase two of the project:
Both sides of North Street from West Street to Chain Bridge, except for the gas lamps along the Bank of America parking lot which will be handled as part of future site development plans.
Both sides of North Street from Chain Bridge to University Drive.
North side of North Street from University Drive to Blenheim.
Blenheim Boulevard between North and Main Streets.
The rights-of-way frontages of the Mayfair residential development located at East and Main Streets.
Sager Avenue to complete gas lamp conversion work between University Drive and East Street.
The map below shows the areas and order in which the LED streetlights will be installed during phase two of the project.
###
Beginning this summer (2023), the City of Fairfax will begin installing new LED streetlights and permanently removing the aging natural gas streetlights in Old Town Fairfax. The new streetlights will enhance lighting and safety in the historic downtown area. In addition to reducing operating costs, the new streetlights are projected to reduce the city’s greenhouse emissions.
The city has $1.4 million budgeted for the first two phases of this project, in which more than 100 natural gas lights will be removed and replaced with new LED streetlights. (Please see the below map which shows the areas for phase 1 and 2.) Approximately 200 remaining gas lights will be replaced when funding becomes available.
The new streetlights will emit a warm, white light. The 2700 Kelvin color temperature falls within the range recommended by the International Dark Sky Association. The city completed a photometric analysis to identify the appropriate brightness, intensity, and coverage evenness. New lights will have a brightness of P30, 5,692 Lumens. The fixtures illuminate the streets and sidewalks below and minimize light pollution.
Replacing the natural gas streetlights with LED streetlights complies with the Old Town Fairfax Historic Overlay District Streetscape Standards. The standards guide the preservation, aesthetic enhancement, and improvement of Old Town Fairfax

There are street lamps designed to reduce light pollution that blocks star visibility and reduce insect disruption. I hope the city is considering implementing those.
