Beginning this summer (2023), the City of Fairfax will begin installing new LED streetlights and permanently removing the aging natural gas streetlights in Old Town Fairfax. The new streetlights will enhance lighting and safety in the historic downtown area. In addition to reducing operating costs, the new streetlights are projected to reduce the city’s greenhouse emissions.
The city has $1.4 million budgeted for the first two phases of this project, in which more than 100 natural gas lights will be removed and replaced with new LED streetlights. (Please see the below map which shows the areas for phase 1 and 2.) Approximately 200 remaining gas lights will be replaced when funding becomes available.
The new streetlights will emit a warm, white light. The 2700 Kelvin color temperature falls within the range recommended by the International Dark Sky Association. The city completed a photometric analysis to identify the appropriate brightness, intensity, and coverage evenness. New lights will have a brightness of P30, 5,692 Lumens. The fixtures illuminate the streets and sidewalks below and minimize light pollution.
Replacing the natural gas streetlights with LED streetlights complies with the Old Town Fairfax Historic Overlay District Streetscape Standards. The standards guide the preservation, aesthetic enhancement, and improvement of Old Town Fairfax.
