Pat Rodio Park, located at 3800 Keith Ave. in the City of Fairfax, is a cherished community space that honors the legacy of Patrick A. Rodio, a dedicated civic leader, youth sports coach, and former city council member. Moving to Fairfax in 1957, Pat Rodio immersed himself in public service, contributing to numerous local organizations including the Fairfax Little League, Babe Ruth Baseball League, and the Fairfax Police Youth Club. In recognition of his unwavering commitment to the community, the city renamed Keith Avenue Park to Pat Rodio Park in 2002. Following the closure of Paul the VI High School and the development of the Boulevard VI community, the park has seen increased use and activity.

The park currently features a playground, multipurpose field, and rentable Little League field across its 4-acre space. The existing playground has reached the end of its lifespan and needs to be replaced. Unfortunately, it is currently located within a floodplain. Updated guidelines regulating recreational use of floodplains do not allow for the new playground to be located within this riparian area. For this reason, the new playground will not be located in the same place as the previous playground.

Where will the playground move to?

Parks and Recreation staff have worked alongside Fairfax City Stormwater Manager Satoshi Eto to identify a location outside of the floodplain. The park is in a low-lying area along the stream, and there was only one level area outside the floodplain available. The new playground will be located along Keith Avenue following the curve of the road.

We understand that moving the playground from the shaded area along the creek to an unshaded area along the road is not ideal. However, every challenge presents unique opportunities to adapt. Parks staff are working alongside the city’s urban forester to identify ways to add trees for future shade, and our playground designer will be integrating a fence into the design.

  • How can you get involved?

As we embark on this improvement, we are seeking input from community members to help shape the design of the new playground. Working with our designer, our budget, and the space available we have identified two unique designs.
