DaMose 12 months agoMy vote is for scheme #1, which is more modern, yet plays tribute to the more historical designs throughout the area. Scheme #2 is not as inviting, especially for a community center. Scheme #2 seems more like an office building. Arguably both designs are very similar and either are a welcomed change to the existing structure.

CottageGal 12 months agoScheme 2 preferred. Much classier and in keeping with our community that I have been blessed to live in for over 60 years. Schematic 2 will better stand the test of time architecturally. Others have made very important comments for intended senior usage...underground parking...really? Entry problems. Existing center much more user friendly. Question: Shared development with Fx County is good economically. But will those going to the health care center portion intermingle with the seniors and children?

quinn 12 months agoI also support Scheme 2, a more classic design that will fit comfortably next to the classic designs of Sherwood and the Police Station. About 2010 I attended all the work sessions before plans were developed for Sherwood, before we were told that there would be no room for seniors there. I am horrified at the plans for forcing seniors into underground parking, making them cross the entire campus, to take an elevator to go up to the top of the building where a large part of their dedicated space will be outdoors? Have you ever watched folks with canes, walkers, and limited mobility slowly, slowly make their way through the building at Green Acres? Perhaps it is because I have worked on Master Plans for a senior center for so many years, but this doesn't seem to reflect that seniors are a priority.Hide reply (1)

CottageGal 12 months agoYou make excellent points about senior usage and underground parking. It will be underutilized if this parking for seniors is only underground. Also agree as to the classic design of #2 preferred.

LynnT 12 months agoI prefer Scheme 2. Clean design that resembles other buildings in the city like the library, police station, Sherwood Center, and City Hall. I don't like the things sticking out from the building that spell Fairfax, they look like they would prevent light from getting in and restrict the view. Everyone knows they are in Fairfax, not sure what the point of it is. I share the concern of others about seniors easily making it into the center, and around the center. What is the difference in size as compared to the Green Acres Senior Center? Maybe I'm misisng something, but besides the Senior Center there doesn't seem to be much space for the rest of the community to come and play. Are there game rooms for the rest of the community? What exactly are the other activities available for those who are not using the Senior Center? Is the gym open to everyone? Is the fitness center open to everyone? What else is available? Before adding more arts type areas on to the Sherwood Center, I would look at usage and what else is needed within the community. It would be good to have a place for people of all ages to go and hang out and play. Maybe it's there and I am just missing it. Also, is the intention to get rid of Green Acres? Is the city day care space the day care that is currently in the Green Acres building? Is that a private day care? Or is it owned and operated by the City? If it is a private day care I'm not sure why we are giving it space in our community center. I do like the fitness center, gym, and track, those are definitely needed. It would be good if there were some game rooms at the site like there are at other community centers (air hockey, ping pong, pool, etc.). Does the gym have basketball courts? Arlington has some great features in their community center. They have a schedule when the community can come in and participate in roller skate night on the track. Their track, fitness center, and basketball courts are in the same large rom. The fitness center is to the side of the track, and in the middle of the track are basketball courts. They have a separate room for the game room. Community center is definiately a good idea as long as there are activities for everyone.

Fairfax Circle 12 months agoscheme 2 is my preference: A more modern look with a classic design with more of a futuristic look.

Ffx Senior 12 months agoThe building looks very nice. The entrance should be at the other end of the building. There is no drop off space at the entrance. Where is the disable parking? If someone needs help, they have to run along the whole building site to get help. Wheelchairs, where do they enter the building? The bus stop should not be at the intersection/corner. Walking the stairs up to the entrance is a problem.

Susan F 12 months agoI prefer Scheme 2. For Scheme 1, the roof overhang and columns look fragile, don't add anything design-wise, and remind me of scaffolding. I also really dislike the boards or shutters that spell "Fairfax". It makes it look too commercial, like a car dealership. The Scheme 2 building is a classic design and will age well, in my humble opinion,
