The city is spending a lot of money to finish the Judicial Park trail along the stream that runs alongside Main Street. When completed, this trail will then start at Old Town and end on Hallman Street, just a few blocks east of the big 50/236 intersection at the heart of Kamp Washington. Please do some design to bridge those few blocks between the end of that trail and the Kamp Washington complex. The City's Bicycle Master Plan(External link) recommends a Neighborway linkage that would connect the Judicial Drive Trail to Kamp Washington as a short-term implementation item, as well as a bicycle facility proposed for Main Street and Lee Highway and spot improvements at major intersections between Hallman Street and the Kamp Washington Activity Center that would be long-term implementation items.

  • Share I think you need to expand your traffic study area a few blocks east along Main Street to avoid total gridlock from the new plan. The traffic going in and out of the Americana Grocery complex between Maple and Hallman creates all kinds of problems for the neighborhood. Cars coming out of the parking lot onto the Maple Street to go west (left turn onto Main) are hard to see, and right of way between them and cars on Maple isn't clear. To avoid that Maple mess, cars come out on the Hallman Street side and try to make a left turn from a stop sign across four lanes of jammed traffic on Main. The loading dock for the Americana Grocery has its entrance off Hallman Street, and the trucks frequently knock down branches and low-hanging utility lines in the neighborhood, because the streets aren't designed for truck traffic. The only partial solution I can think of is to make Hallman Street right turn only at Main street, but that doesn't fix the problems at Maple or with the trucks. We need an actual traffic engineer to come up with some solutions before the Kamp Washington plan is finalized. on Facebook Share I think you need to expand your traffic study area a few blocks east along Main Street to avoid total gridlock from the new plan. Thanks for your input. While we are unable to expand the boundaries of the study area, our transportation consultants are currently doing a deeper examination of traffic and transportation network issues in the Kamp Washington study area, and the results of this additional study will influence the final recommendations of the Small Area Plan. Our Public Works department is studying other potential changes for the area east of the study area, but overall increases in development will be analyzed when redevelopment occurs in the future.

While the Small Area Plan considers traffic and recommends remediation measures throughout the Activity Center, the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority has recently awarded funds for an intersection improvement in the Rust Road/Lee Highway/Jermantown Road vicinity. Separate from the Small Area Plan, these improvements will allow for optimized lane use and signal phasing that can better serve Rust Road traffic, improving traffic flow for both passenger and transit vehicles. At this time, design and construction are anticipated to occur from FY 2024 to FY 2026.

  • Share What plans are there to preserve the historic Albert Sherwood tourist home, John Sherwood house, Ruth Sherwood house and the duplexes on Park Road, east of Fern Street? I fear this area could be incorporated into commercial development. Also, it is important to protect the homes, history and economic diversity of the Westmore Subdivision from the wave of tear-downs, re-development and cut-through traffic that will spread out of the Kamp Washington area. I would like to see some street closures, akin to what was done to University Drive when traffic was re-routed onto George Mason Boulevard, but I doubt my neighbors would agree. on Facebook Share What plans are there to preserve the historic Albert Sherwood tourist home, John Sherwood house, Ruth Sherwood house and the duplexes on Park Road, east of Fern Street? Although the Small Area Plan is not studying these properties since they are not included in the study area, the City hired a historic resources architect to document the Moore House in 2019 and plan to have him to return to document the Sherwood House and other properties later this spring or summer (pending owner/resident permission). We do not anticipate any commercial redevelopment for these homes.
