UPDATE: City Council approved, unanimously, to adopt a resolution to endorse the city’s FY24 Transportation Alternatives Applications for the Chain Bridge Road Shared Use Path and the Fern Street Neighborhood Connection.
###
The Missing Link This project will construct a missing link of path on the west side of Chain Bridge Road between Assembly Drive and Northfax Street (formerly Orchard Street). The new trail section would connect north to the shared use path being constructed as part of the Eaton Place/Chain Bridge Road intersection improvements, approved by City Council on April 11, 2023. The trail would connect west to the on-road bicycle lanes being constructed on Northfax Street and south to the new path being constructed as part of the site redevelopment.
Stitching Neighborhoods Together A shared use path in this location was recommended in the Northfax Small Area Plan(External link). Page 10 of the plan describes the idea of stitching together neighborhoods: “A key idea of the Northfax vision is to bridge the divides between Northfax and the surrounding neighborhoods and to connect with the Accotink Creek watershed. The vision recommends new pedestrian crossings at Chain Bridge Road and Fairfax Boulevard, as well as better pedestrian and bicycle facilities on major streets.”
Priority Project This project is included in the city’s FY2024-25 Two-Year Transportation Program, adopted by City Council on June 13, 2023. The projects in the program are eligible for regional, state, and federal funding consideration over the next 2-10 years. The projects recommended in the program balance local and regional transportation needs, improve connectivity, and facilitate livability.
Funding The City Council will be asked to endorse an application for federal Transportation Alternatives funding for this project at their September 12 City Council meeting. Councilmembers will review feedback from the current outreach period when considering endorsement of the funding application. If the city is successful in receiving this funding, it would become available in 2024, with construction occurring in 2025-2026.
Open House The proposed plans for the path will be presented at an open house from 5-7 p.m. on July 12 at Willowwood Plaza, located at 10300 Eaton Pl.

The City of Fairfax is developing a concept for a shared use path on the west side of Chain Bridge Road between Assembly Drive and Northfax Street (formerly Orchard Street). The new path would connect the planned shared use paths north of Eaton Place (to be constructed with the Chain Bridge Rd/Eaton Pl intersection project) and south of Northfax Street (to be constructed with the Northfax West redevelopment). This would create a continuous bicycle and pedestrian facility along Chain Bridge Road as recommended in the Northfax Small Area Plan.
City Council will be asked to endorse an application for federal Transportation Alternatives (TA) funding at the September 12 City Council meeting. If the application is successful, funding would become available in 2024, with construction in 2025-2026.
