About the Study

The City of Fairfax is evaluating the feasibility of constructing new sidewalks on the east side of Rust Road between Main Street and Westmore Drive, and on Westmore Drive between Rust Road and Fairfax Street. This proposed project would connect the existing sidewalks on Rust Road and Fairfax Street and provide a continuous sidewalk between the residential neighborhood and commercial destinations on Main Street. It would also provide stormwater drainage improvements and improve safety for all road users.

Residents on Rust Road and Westmore Drive submitted petitions to the city requesting new sidewalks on these streets. After receiving these petitions, the city conducted a high-level evaluation of the existing street and sidewalk network based on the Residential New Sidewalk Policy. This project was recommended for further study and approved by the Fairfax City Council in the FY 2026-2027 Two-Year Transportation Program.

The goals of the sidewalk feasibility study include:

  • Evaluate existing conditions such as available right-of-way, utility locations, and other conditions that may impact sidewalk design and cost
  • Develop preliminary concept design to identify potential conflicts and funding needs
  • Collect community feedback about the preliminary concept design

Study Status

This project is in the “Concept” phase, near the beginning of the development process, and subsequent phases have not been funded. This is a critical stage for community feedback. The city council needs input to determine whether this project should proceed. If there is consensus to proceed, the council may direct staff to seek funding for design and construction.
